TED Talk: Kevin Briggs, "The bridge between suicide and life"

Click Week 11; May 16 on the right side of this blog for information and directions on what you must do before class on May 23.

Today, I just wanted to share something with you...

I saw this Tedtalk and thought that not only is it an important message to get out to people, but also, it's a good example of some of the visual and oral skills we talked about in class on May 16.

Can you identify which skills Kevin Briggs uses to get his message across? Leave your thoughts in a comment below.

  1. it's a tooooooo sad ....ㅠㅠ
This presetation 's take away looks same as lk 's presentation in mid term
(we should listen to others story and shrae our times)
First of all, his consistent vocie tone is associated with the subject about suicide well.
and I think the video is more effective than just picture and his pose that clench his fist looks meaningful

  3. I couldn't agree more with his talk. When people are going through hard time, all they need and wanted is just someone who would shut up and listen. His attitude with calm voice (which doesn't seem to be intended) is effective enough to leave audience something very touching. No dramatic gestures nor facial expression and that made me think and imagine about people he has encountered at the bridge. Thanks for sharing this speech!

  4. Actually this video was hard to understand for me to listen to..
that's why I concentrated on his external things when he made the speech.

first of all, his body direction was for every audiences by turning around from here to there. That could make them feel that we are communicating now.

And oneday in our class we said that putting speaker's hand into pocket looks rude.
But in the video, rather, I felt that he is serious and confident about his story.

Next, he used some materials such as photos and letter that he introduced during the speech. Visual material could make audience focus on something more, and the letter that he read infront of people could be a real proof like I am telling now with a reality.

Above these 3points were my opinion. thank you :)

  5. his voice was really calm and relaxed.
    that led his presentation nicely.

    reading out letters.
i think that was the real voice(good examples) of that subject.

his left hand in his pocket.
looked comfortable. it wasn't that looked arrogant.

    using good pics.
all pics were convincing and suitable for his presentation.

  6. This TED was difficult to understand to me but I'm really impressed by his sincerity

First, a visual skill he used is special pictures of his own experience. It is very effective to make people's concentration.

And a oral skill he used is 'speak slowly'. His speech was very touching because he spoke clear sentences to audience slowly. 'Speak slowly' with pauses can stimulate audience's imagination. So people can imagine his story and then it makes concentration.

  7. hmmmmmmmm.... his voice is good, comfortable but I can't concentrate until the end because there's no variation in his voice or facial expression. So, It's quiet boring. He is native guy, so his oral skill is good and smoothe but It's very difficult to feel some sparks.. I agree with Jiwoo.
